A little kitten has no concept of ‘day-time’ and ‘night-time’, and in particular when is time to play and when is time to sleep. Facing the prospect of endless sleepless nights as a little bundle of energy and fun demanded we play at all hours of the night as well as day, we decided Purrdy would sleep in the kitchen. We had a concertina door between the kitchen and hallway.
5 minutes later, Purrdy is back in the bedroom having bashed her way through the door.
We put a box against the door to stop it moving, put her to bed and went back to bed
5 minutes later a happy purr announced her return.
Next day, we put up a piece of hardboard in the doorway between the cupboard under the stairs and kitchen as we did not have a door that fitted, there was a 6 inch gap at the top around 5 feet off the ground.
Yes, 10 minutes after putting her to bed that night, this kitten, minus the fur on her tummy where she had squeezed through the gap, made a triumphal appearance in the bedroom!
We cut a door to size the following morning!
2 years later, having calmed down a bit, she was allowed to choose where to sleep – she chose the end of our bed! Every night, she would say goodnight to “shower cat” and jump on the end of the bed, and settle down on our feet. She always had to have contact with some part of us, if we moved – she moved to re-establish contact.
